Students should then devise a plan for periodically assessing their progress toward meeting these goals as they write. For example, as students plan to write a persuasive essay, they may set goals for their writing, such as providing three or more reasons for their beliefs. Many strategies can be used to assist students with more than one component of the writing process. More complicated strategies, such as peer revising, should be introduced in 2nd grade or later. Students should learn basic strategies, such as POW (Pick ideas, Organize their notes, Write and say more), in 1st or 2nd grade. Students need to acquire specific strategies for each component of the writing process. Teach students strategies for the various components of the writing process An additional component, publishing, may be included to develop and share a final product. Instruction should include the components of the writing process: planning, drafting, sharing, evaluating, revising, and editing. It is a process that requires that the writer think carefully about the purpose for writing, plan what to say, plan how to say it, and understand what the reader needs to know. Writing well involves more than simply documenting ideas as they come to mind. When teachers integrate writing tasks with other content-area lessons, students may think more critically about the content-area material. Additionally, students can write before, during, and/or after reading, to articulate what they already know, what they want to know, and what they learned. Students also can write imaginary diary entries of people from the time period they are studying in social studies. In science, for example, lab reports require detailed procedural writing and clear descriptions of observations. Time for writing practice can occur in the context of other content-area instruction. The remaining 30 minutes should be spent on writing practice, where students apply the skills they learned from writing-skills instruction. The hour should include at least 30 minutes dedicated to teaching a variety of writing strategies, techniques, and skills appropriate to students’ levels, as detailed in Recommendations 2, 3, and 4 of this guide. The panel recommends a minimum of one hour a day devoted to writing for students, beginning in 1st grade (For students in kindergarten, at least 30 minutes each day should be devoted to writing and developing writing skills.). As teachers observe the way students write, they can identify difficulties and assist students with learning and applying the writing process. Time for writing practice can help students gain confidence in their writing abilities. Students need dedicated instructional time to learn the skills and strategies necessary to become effective writers, as well as time to practice what they learn. However, recent surveys of elementary teachers indicate that students spend little time writing during the school day. Please let me know if I have a valid concern or if I am just overthinking.Providing adequate time for students to write is one essential element of an effective writing instruction program. I feel like it would only be phantom voltage on a digital multimeter if anything but I don't want to make a mistake like the previous owner who switched the neutral and when I touched the old metal fan/light combo to remove the bulbs the LED and CFL lit up as if I had turned on the switch :| Luckily I did not get shocked. Of course I would only be switching the hots (black/red) and never the neutral but for some reason I am weary that the fan being on without the lights being on may induce current into the powered-off black through the shared neutral enough to light up the LEDs. This is an uncommon lighting setup as I would like the fan light to turn on with the rest of the main lights and the fan to be on it's own switch. 2 blacks wirenutted, 2 whites wire nutted, red fan circuit is capped off and connected to nothing. 3 reds wirenutted, 3 neutrals wirenutted (fan/light combo only has 1 neutral wire). 3 blacks wire nutted, 3 whites wirenutted, 2 reds wirenutted. The plan is to run 12-3 NM-B in the following manner:įirst recessed light. I am going to have two recessed lights and a fan/light combo. I feel like I am being super paranoid here but I want to make sure I am going to wire these lights correctly.
